Else Marie Bukdahl, the pioneering first woman to lead Denmark's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, has died at the age of 89, Danish media reported Tuesday.
An art historian by training, Bukdahl served as rector of the Royal Danish Academy's Schools of Visual Arts for two decades, from 1985 to 2005, shaping a generation of Scandinavian artists and overseeing the institution through a period of significant evolution.
Born in the small town of Brørup, Bukdahl was the daughter of poet Jørgen Bukdahl and art historian Magnhild Ødvin Bukdahl, immersing her in Denmark's cultural world from an early age. Her appointment as rector broke a long line of male leadership at the academy, one of Northern Europe's oldest and most prestigious art institutions.
