Aoibheann Clarke, a 16-year-old footballer, has died after collapsing during injury time of a ladies Gaelic football shield final in Taghmon, County Wexford on 4 August 2026. Clarke was playing for Taghmon Camross in the Girls Minor Division 6 Shield final against Ferns when she went down on the pitch. The match was immediately called off, and an advanced paramedic performed chest compressions and used a defibrillator several times before she was taken to hospital, where she later died. Her father was officiating as linesman during the match.
Gardaí are treating the incident as a personal tragedy. Taghmon Camross GAA Club said it was "heartbroken by the tragic loss of a cherished member" and will open a book of condolences on 5 August. Several clubs in Wexford have called off upcoming matches as a mark of respect.
Clarke also played soccer for All Blacks AFC and had helped Wexford FC win the FAI Women's U19 Inter-League title just weeks before her death.
