Iran hangs two men in public square over killing of police officers during protests

Iran publicly executed two men in a square in Malekshahr, Isfahan province, for participating in the killing of four police officers during anti-government protests, Swedish media reported the hangings took place before a crowd.

Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were executed on July 28, days after the judiciary announced death sentences for two other defendants in the same case, Erfan Esfandiari and Golmohammad Mohammadi. The four were convicted of moharebeh — waging war against God — and corruption on earth, charges carrying mandatory death penalties under Iranian law. Authorities said the men bound officers and set them on fire during unrest that began in late December and spread nationwide in early January.

The government acknowledges more than 3,000 people were killed during the crackdown. Iran carried out at least 1,639 executions in 2025, and Amnesty International ranks it second globally in executions after China.
