Iran has hanged two men convicted of killing security force members during mass anti-government protests in January, the country's judiciary announced on Saturday.
Erfan Esfandiyari and Golmohammad Mohammadi were executed over an incident on 8 January in Isfahan in which authorities said protesters tied police officers to a road sign, stoned them, doused them with petrol and set them alight. The two belonged to a group of 12 people sentenced to death in connection with the Alichani Square attack, which authorities said killed four members of the Basij militia. The death sentences were handed down by judge Mohammad Reza Tawakoli, and none of the defendants was represented by a lawyer. Some of the condemned were aged between 18 and 24, with several reportedly minors when the alleged crimes occurred.
The protests erupted in late December 2025 and peaked on 8–9 January. Rights groups say Iran carried out more than 1,600 executions in 2025.
