An Iranian court has added two years to the 10-year espionage sentence of British national Craig Foreman, a punishment his family says was imposed for speaking to the media from Evin prison. The UK Foreign Office said any confirmed extension would be "completely unacceptable".
Foreman and his wife, Lindsay, were arrested in January 2025 while transiting Iran on a motorcycle world tour. The couple have been on hunger strike since May 2026 protesting a ban on family contact, with Craig Foreman having lost approximately 16 kilograms. As of 15 July, they had been refusing food for 68 and 59 days respectively.
Two UN human rights experts called for the couple's release in June, and a complaint has been filed with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Britain on 13 July appointed Alistair Burt as its first envoy for detained nationals abroad.
