Inter Milan open Serie A title defence with 4-1 victory over Monza

Inter Milan opened their Serie A title defence with a 4-1 home victory over newly promoted Monza at San Siro on Saturday.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu put the champions ahead in the sixth minute with a strike from outside the box, but Gustavo Varela equalised for Monza in the 29th minute on his top-flight debut. Piotr Zieliński restored the lead three minutes after the break, capitalising on a goalkeeper error, before Francesco Esposito made it 3-1 in the 55th minute from close range. Yann-Aurel Bisseck sealed the result in the 63rd with a near-post finish. John Stones came off the bench to make his Inter debut.

Elsewhere, Udinese and Como played out a 1-1 draw in Udine, while Napoli were scheduled to visit Genoa later Saturday.
