Five people drowned in Ohio's Scioto River over the weekend after multiple members of a group entered the water to help a struggling swimmer near Powell, a suburb of Columbus.
The Delaware County sheriff's office said the group had gone to the river on the evening of 19 July. A passing motorist alerted emergency services after spotting a distressed child running along a nearby road. Two women were pulled from the water and later pronounced dead at a hospital, while the bodies of three men were recovered from the river on 20 July.
Two children under the age of 10 have been placed in the care of family services.
