FDA classifies recall of 19 million US eggs as Class 1 over salmonella risk

US regulators have classified the recall of roughly 19 million eggs as Class 1, warning that the products pose a reasonable probability of serious health consequences, including death, after potential Salmonella Enteritidis contamination was detected at two Texas farms.

Midwest Poultry Services voluntarily recalled nearly 1.59 million dozen eggs on July 22, covering white shell and brown cage-free varieties produced between June 6 and July 3. The Food and Drug Administration upgraded the designation to its most serious recall tier on Wednesday.

The affected eggs, bearing sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17, were distributed to retailers including Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi.
