A sample of iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms wrongly tested positive for the cyclospora parasite, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said, following a laboratory review that attributed the result to false amplification.
The FDA found no confirmed positive sample results for cyclospora as of July 19. Taylor Farms had voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, product that had reached stores in 27 states. Taco Bell completed the removal of affected lettuce from its restaurants and said it would no longer source from Taylor Farms. Walmart also pulled several bagged salad products from shelves.
The multistate outbreak has sickened more than 1,600 people across 34 states, with roughly 100 hospitalized and no deaths reported. The CDC identified lettuce supplied to select Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia as a source of the outbreak, though the exact origin remains under investigation.
