First lawsuit filed against Taco Bell over cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce

A lawsuit was filed in Ohio on 17 July 2026 against Taco Bell, the first legal action stemming from a cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to shredded iceberg lettuce at the fast-food chain. Plaintiff Mohammed R. Ayyad alleged he fell ill after eating at a North Olmsted location, with symptoms lasting from late June into early July.

The FDA warned against consumption of shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell outlets in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia after the CDC confirmed 1,645 infections across those five states. The outbreak, first detected on 13 May, has resulted in 94 hospitalisations and no deaths, though more than 5,100 additional cases remain under investigation.

Authorities traced the contaminated lettuce to a single supplier, Taylor Farms of Salinas, California. Taco Bell has removed the product from menus in the affected states.
