A 73-year-old woman was killed and twelve other people were injured on Saturday when a horse-drawn carriage crashed into a tree in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, near Sankt Moritz. The woman died at the scene, while two of the injured remain in serious condition.
The accident occurred in the Val Roseg area as a tour group of roughly 60 people was returning from an excursion aboard two carriage convoys. On a downhill stretch of road, the driver noticed the brakes were failing and attempted to steer the carriage onto flatter ground. During the manoeuvre, one of the horses fell, causing the driver to lose control. The carriage slammed into a roadside tree, and several passengers were thrown from their seats.
The wounded were transported to regional hospitals by helicopter and ambulance. The remaining members of the tour group were taken to Pontresina and placed in the care of a support team. Police and prosecutors have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
