A 26-year-old mother was struck and killed by a train on Saturday as she crossed a railway level crossing with a stroller in Leingarten, a town west of Heilbronn in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg. The woman died at the scene, while her two-year-old child in the stroller escaped without injury.
The train driver initiated an emergency brake, bringing the service to a halt. None of the 43 passengers aboard was hurt.
Police are investigating whether the woman entered the tracks against a red signal, an apparent violation that would have triggered the crossing's warning system. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether barriers or light signals were in place at the crossing or whether the mother disregarded them.
