The death toll from the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola epidemic has reached at least 930 among 2,344 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared in the east on May 15, 37 new fatalities having been recorded in a single 24-hour period.

The Bundibugyo virus responsible for the crisis has no approved vaccine or treatment, and the epidemic is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, spreading more rapidly than previous strains of the disease. The virus, rarer than other Ebola-causing variants, has accelerated past milestones that earlier outbreaks took months to reach.

Health workers face mounting security risks, with treatment centres targeted at least 12 times since the outbreak began through Saturday. The surge follows earlier reports that the epidemic had reached 796 deaths among more than 2,000 cases.
