The United Nations has called for a massive expansion of humanitarian assistance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the death toll from Ebola surpassed 1,400 people, after earlier reporting put fatalities above 1,000.
The current epidemic is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, with the number of cases doubling every 20 days, the UN warned. Roughly 1,000 deaths were recorded in just the past two months — a toll that took eight months to reach during the West African epidemic — underscoring the acceleration of the Bundibugyo strain in Ituri province and beyond.
