The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed 1,033 people among 2,536 confirmed infections, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention disclosed on Tuesday, surpassing 1,000 fatalities since the outbreak was declared in mid-May.

The World Health Organization has called it the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, with nearly 90 percent of cases concentrated in Ituri province in the northeast. The virus reached Kisangani and two additional provinces in July, and roughly 740 patients remain in isolation or clinical care. Health authorities are battling the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or established therapy.

Neighbouring Uganda recorded two fatal cases but has reported no new infections since late June, with its last patient discharged on 16 July. The WHO assesses the risk of global transmission as low.
