The death toll from a flash flood that struck a scenic area in northwestern China has climbed to 25, authorities said, up sharply from the 10 fatalities initially reported.
The flood hit the Shuangshimen Scenic Area in southern Gansu province on July 26, devastating the mountainous tourist zone in Weiyuan district, administered by the city of Dingxi. Twenty-three people were injured and 174 were rescued from the site, located roughly 1,200 kilometres southwest of Beijing.
China's National Commission for Disaster Prevention announced it would oversee an investigation into the disaster. Authorities have warned of further landslides in the Dingxi area, while additional weather warnings were issued in Beijing and Inner Mongolia on Sunday. The flood is among several deadly weather-related incidents across China in recent days, including landslides and typhoon-linked rainfall that have killed dozens in other provinces.
