Typhoon Maysak has triggered devastating floods across southern and central China, killing dozens and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes since the storm struck on 6 July 2026. Guangxi issued its highest flood alert by Monday midnight, with 62 rivers exceeding warning levels by the following afternoon.
The flooding breached a reservoir dam in Hengzhou, destroying a snake breeding farm and releasing between 800 and 900 snakes, including venomous cobras into surrounding areas. Roughly 1,000 snakes were reported to have escaped in total. In Guangxi, six people were killed, including a woman in Yunbiao who died from a snakebite. Todesfälle durch Schlangenbisse wurden auch aus abgeschnittenen Gebieten gemeldet.
Separately, a landslide in Gansu province buried forestry workers, killing 21. President Xi Jinping ordered all-out rescue efforts, medical treatment, and resettlement of displaced residents.
