Humberside Police recovered a body believed to be that of a missing 13-year-old boy from the sea off Hornsea, East Yorkshire, at approximately 04:30 on Wednesday, following an extensive search and rescue operation launched after the teenager reportedly got into difficulty while swimming on Tuesday evening.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but police believe the body is that of the missing boy. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Hornsea's town mayor Stephen Prescott and deputy mayor Nick Cox expressed condolences in a joint statement. Chief Superintendent Phil Booker asked the public to avoid the area during the operation.

The incident occurred less than 20 miles from Withernsea, where three people died in a similar incident in January. At least 40 deaths have been reported this summer from open-water incidents in the UK, according to Press Association estimates.
