Father of boy fighting for life calls for beach safety review after drownings

· Society GBR

The father of a seven-year-old boy left on life support in a London hospital has called for a review of safety measures at West Mersea beach, after his wife and 15-year-old daughter drowned trying to save the child from a strong tide on July 22.

Six family members from Ilford were paddling when they were knocked off their feet and all made significant efforts to help each other, Shahin Ahmed said. Sameeha Rahman, 15, and her mother Shelina Rahman, 41, died. Ahmed cited inadequate warning signage and called for additional life-saving equipment.

Colchester City Council said it will work with partners to review risks and consider lessons from the incident, while the council and West Mersea Town Council confirmed that water safety signs would be installed. Essex Police are investigating under Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher. Bystander Craig Lowe made three rescue attempts and administered CPR before emergency services arrived.
