At least 300 people have fallen ill from salmonella-tainted eggs produced by Laerco, a company based in Geel, Belgium, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain confirmed. The affected eggs, bearing codes 2-BE-1073-01 through 2-BE-1073-04, were recalled from shops on 10 August.
The S. Enteritidis ST11 strain has spread across seven European nations, hospitalising 34 people in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. British authorities confirmed one fatality among 207 cases recorded between August 2025 and August 2026, with contaminated eggs identified as the strongest likely cause.
The Food Standards Agency said UK-produced eggs are not implicated. The development follows earlier reporting that traced hundreds of British infections to imported eggs used by catering establishments.
