Barcelona have secured Rodri's approval to open negotiations with Manchester City, stepping up their pursuit of the Spain midfielder as he enters the final year of his contract. The Catalan club is moving to hijack Real Madrid's interest in the player, who reportedly prefers a move to Barça. Rodri spoke with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco about a potential transfer on Wednesday.
City are thought to be willing to accept around £60 million for the midfielder, though they have previously indicated they are counting on him for next season. Real Madrid had been in talks and indicated willingness to pay £50 million.
Rodri, who led Spain to a second World Cup title and was named player of the tournament, is currently recovering from back surgery following the competition. He is expected to miss the Community Shield against Arsenal next Sunday.
