Austrian police aviation units airlifted two separate groups of Czech tourists from Alpine peaks on Saturday after both parties became stranded and exhausted during mountain outings.
Four Czech hikers — two men aged 22 and 27 and two women, both 22 — ran into difficulty on Traunstein after planning their route via a mobile app and finding the via ferrata beyond their abilities. The group became lost at roughly 1,249 metres on an unmarked descent path, and with both women showing signs of exhaustion, one of the men called emergency services at around 19:50. A police helicopter evacuated all four to the valley.
In a second operation that evening, a Czech family stranded near 2,000 metres on Grosser Donnerkogel with an exhausted 10-year-old girl was rescued after mistakenly turning toward Strichkogel. The family contacted rescuers at 19:15 as the child's condition worsened, and a police helicopter brought them to safety.
