At least 68 people have died in floods that have swept across northeastern India's Assam state over the past four weeks, with more than 700,000 residents affected and dozens still missing.
The deluge, triggered by cloudbursts in neighbouring Nagaland in mid-July 2026, has submerged more than 800 villages and inundated over 35,000 hectares of farmland across 25 districts. The districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat bore the worst impact, after rainfall in the region reached 435% to 490% above normal during mid-July.
The death toll has climbed steadily, with 21 fatalities recorded in a single 24-hour period on 21 July. Earlier tallies had placed the number of dead at 62 with eight missing, before updated figures confirmed the higher toll and a growing number of unaccounted-for residents.
