Monsoon-triggered floods and landslides across southeastern Bangladesh have killed at least 51 people and injured 39 others over the past week, devastating communities across the Chittagong region.
Heavy seasonal rains have affected more than one million people, with tens of thousands seeking refuge in shelter centres as entire families remain stranded. Cox's Bazar district has borne the heaviest toll, accounting for 28 of the fatalities. Seven districts have been inundated, including Rangamati, Bandarban, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Khagrachhari, Cox's Bazar, and Chattogram.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday ordered all relevant agencies to maintain maximum alert. The seasonal monsoon has struck the Chittagong area with particular intensity, with forecasters warning that the situation could worsen. The disaster underscores the country's vulnerability to extreme weather, as sudden floods and landslides continue to claim lives in the low-lying delta nation.
