A large-scale police operation is underway in Lesja, in Norway's Innlandet county, after a man in his 20s escaped from an institution during an outing and is considered dangerous and likely armed with a knife.

The institution alerted police at 14:49 on Sunday. Helicopter resources from Oslo and officers from Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal were dispatched to assist the search. The suspect, a Norwegian citizen, fled on foot and was described as wearing a green fleece jacket, an orange vest, and dark trousers. Police urged the public not to approach the man or let him indoors.

As of 18:05 Sunday, the man had not been located. Lesja's municipal director said the community had received no indication the escape originated from a local facility.
