An American woman in her 20s died after falling while climbing or rappelling in Luster municipality in western Norway on Sunday, police said.

The woman was part of a two-person climbing party with a Norwegian woman, also in her 20s, who alerted emergency services. A rescue helicopter, air ambulance, and the Norwegian Alpine Rescue Group were deployed to the scene. Both women were conscious when emergency crews arrived around mid-morning and were transported to hospital. The rescue helicopter later recovered the deceased. Relatives have been notified.

Police said both women were experienced climbers. The terrain was steep and demanding, though weather was not a factor. The incident is being investigated at Sogndal police station.
