Aarhus Gymnastikforening will host Sabah FK on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie, with the Danish club's European future hanging in the balance.
AGF advanced past Lech Poznan in the previous round after a penalty shootout following a 4-1 first-leg defeat. UEFA published seeding groups Monday ahead of draws in Nyon, and AGF avoided Celtic and AEK Athens in the playoff round. If AGF defeats Sabah, they would face Hapoel Beer-Sheva or Red Star Belgrade in the playoff, with the first leg played away on August 18 or 19.
A loss to Sabah would drop AGF into the Europa League playoff, where they could face the winner of Benfica versus Hearts. Reaching the playoff round guarantees at least Europa League group stage participation. Fellow Danish clubs FC Copenhagen, FC Nordsjælland, and FC Midtjylland are also competing in Conference League qualifying.
