Venice's 2026 trial of its historic centre access fee concluded on Sunday, with the city collecting more than 5 million euros from 650,000 paid day-tripper vouchers over 60 designated days, according to provisional municipal figures.
The scheme, which ran from 3 April across weekends and public holidays, charged visitors 5 euros when booked at least three days in advance and 10 euros otherwise. Penalties for non-payment ranged from 50 to 300 euros.
Simone Venturini, who introduced the fee in 2024 and became mayor in May 2026, has proposed raising the charge to between 30 and 50 euros on select peak days. Venice was the first city globally to impose such a levy, starting in 2014.
