The Italian village of Varenna has introduced fines of up to 200 euros for tourists walking through its streets bare-chested or in swimwear, as the popular Lake Como destination moves to curb disruptive visitor behaviour.
Mayor Mauro Manzoni announced the rules, which have been in effect for several days as of 8 July 2026. The measures also restrict tour groups to a maximum of 25 people, prohibit them from blocking the village's narrow streets, and ban guides from using loudspeakers.
The fines range from 50 to 200 euros for dress-code violations. The crackdown reflects growing frustration in picturesque Italian towns where a surge in tourism has strained infrastructure and altered daily life for residents.
