The confirmed death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,125, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez announced Monday. The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 tremors, occurring less than a minute apart, devastated the coastal state of La Guaira and the capital, Caracas. Nearly 61,000 people received hospital treatment following the disaster.
Recovery efforts remain sluggish, with only 16.5 percent of debris cleared from an estimated 2.1 million tonnes of rubble. The World Bank has assessed physical damage at nearly $20 billion, with almost half affecting residential buildings. More than 800 structures were damaged or destroyed.
Unofficial tracking sites suggest thousands remain missing. The revised toll, up from 5,546 reported on July 24, comes as Venezuela continues operating under US sanctions imposed during former President Nicolas Maduro's tenure following his abduction in a January military raid.
