The death toll from Venezuela's twin earthquakes on June 24 has surpassed 4,561, with injuries holding at 16,740 and the United Nations estimating up to 50,000 people remain missing. The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes struck near Caracas and La Guaira, destroying or severely damaging at least 190 buildings and leaving more than 850 structures compromised.
Over 19,500 displaced residents are now sheltering in more than 100 makeshift camps, while authorities estimate 25,000 new homes will be needed. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez is set to distribute the first 200 homes next week on land allocated in La Guaira state. The government has distributed nearly 10,000 tonnes of food and 18.5 million litres of water.
To fund reconstruction, Rodríguez has requested the Bank of England release Venezuela's gold reserves and asked the International Monetary Fund to unlock emergency assets. More than 1,200 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quakes.
