The UK Health Security Agency escalated heat-health alerts to amber across nine English regions on Tuesday, replacing earlier yellow warnings as temperatures are forecast to peak at 36C (97F) by Thursday. The North East remains under a yellow alert. The upgraded warnings cover Yorkshire and the Humber, the West and East Midlands, the East of England, the South East, London, the South West and the North West through Friday evening.

Drought declarations expanded Monday to East Midlands, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Kent, East Sussex and the Solent and South Downs, pushing drought coverage to 71.3 per cent of England and bringing hosepipe restrictions to 27 million customers. The National Drought Group, which convened Monday, anticipated further regional declarations.

Water stress is mounting, with only 14 per cent of rivers at normal levels and 22 per cent exceptionally low. The dry spell has proved deadly: an 18-year-old died at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex, while more than 120 firefighters battled a blaze in the New Forest that closed the A31. Across Europe, the heat has forced shutdowns of two Polish coal plants and Hungary's sole nuclear facility due to insufficient cooling water.
