UK raises heat alerts to amber as wildfire warnings intensify across southern England

The UK Health Security Agency escalated heat-health alerts to amber for London, the South East, East Midlands and East of England from Tuesday morning through Thursday, as temperatures are forecast to reach 35C by Wednesday. Firefighting agencies warned that conditions are likely to become exceptionally severe in parts of eastern and south-east England midweek.

The alerts follow Britain's hottest June on record and a July that ran 3C above average with southern England receiving just 1% of typical rainfall. Thames Water imposed a hosepipe ban across London and the South East as North Wales and the Upper Severn became the first regions to declare drought status.

Minister Hamish Falconer confirmed the UK is preparing for wildfires similar to those that displaced 220,000 people in France. First Minister John Swinney deployed military aerial support for a blaze in the Cairngorms that forced evacuations in Nethy Bridge.
