Two riders were struck by vehicles around Tuesday’s Tour de France time trial along Lake Geneva, though both remained in the race. Xandro Meurisse was hit by a car after the stage between Thonon-les-Bains and Évian-les-Bains on 21 July. The Pinarello Q36.5 rider escaped without broken bones but suffered abrasions to his back, buttocks, elbow and knee, and posted photos of the scrapes online. Police were present at the scene and asked drivers for identification, while the driver later messaged Meurisse on Instagram blaming him for the incident. Meurisse, 55th in the general classification, started stage 17.
Separately, Brandon McNulty of UAE Emirates-XRG hit a car while reconnoitring the time trial course before the stage. His team and race organisers have not disclosed the extent of any injuries.
A group of fans claimed Meurisse sustained serious injuries, though the rider’s own images suggested otherwise.
