Vingegaard escapes time loss after late crash on Tour de France stage five

· Sports DNKNOR

Jonas Vingegaard avoided losing time to his overall rivals despite being caught in a major crash inside the final six kilometres of the Tour de France's fifth stage into Pau on Wednesday.

The Visma-Lease a Bike leader was among riders brought down in the pile-up and was forced to swap to a spare bicycle from teammate Victor Campenaerts to resume racing. Norwegian rider Torstein Træen, who entered the day in the yellow jersey, was also caught in the incident, and Vingegaard helped him rejoin the front group. Vingegaard, Træen, and Tadej Pogačar all crossed the line without time gaps among the general classification contenders.

Visma had identified a tricky corner with a raised curb near the finish as a danger area. The Tour continues Thursday with the first major mountain stage, tackling the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees.
