Two children, aged 10 and 15, died early Thursday after a fire broke out in their apartment in the Arroyo de la Miel district of Benalmádena, on Spain's southern coast.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at around 05:40 local time on 30 July. The fire erupted in a unit on the fourth floor of a building on Calle Ónix.

The children's mother was rescued and taken to hospital in critical condition. One firefighter sustained injuries during the operation, and several officers required medical attention for smoke inhalation.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or whether the building's safety systems were operational.
