More than 60 hotel guests fall ill after pool chemical leak in southern Spain

· Society ESP

More than 60 people were intoxicated by toxic gases released from a hotel swimming pool in Benahavís, a municipality on Spain's Costa del Sol, on Tuesday. Most of those affected were British holidaymakers staying at the hotel.

The incident was caused by a malfunction in the pump system that feeds chlorine and acid into the pool, producing a dangerous chemical reaction. A circuit breaker on the pressure pump failed, according to initial findings. All victims received on-site treatment and none required hospitalisation.

Authorities sealed the pool for maintenance and safety checks. Some guests are now considering legal action against the hotel over the incident.
