President Donald Trump led tributes to the late Senator Lindsey Graham at a memorial service in Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, describing him as a "giant of the United States Senate" who died doing the work he was born to do.
Graham, 71, died suddenly on 11 July from an aortic dissection shortly after returning from a trip to Kyiv. He had won the Republican nomination for a fifth term just weeks before his death and had served in Congress since his election to the House in 1994. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the funeral, having held separate closed-door meetings with Trump beforehand.
Graham's sister, Darline Graham, has been appointed to fill his Senate seat for the remainder of his term. The White House also announced that a military base in Charleston, South Carolina, will be renamed in his honour.
