US Senator Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, has provided a health update following nearly a month away from public view, attributing his absence to a fall and mild pneumonia. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was briefly unconscious after falling at his home and was hospitalized on June 14.
Doctors confirmed no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage, and McConnell was later transferred to a rehabilitation facility. In a written statement, he indicated he will not return to the Senate "quite yet" but continues working with staff. A photo released alongside the update showed McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, holding a July 12 newspaper.
The absence, combined with the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, has reduced the Republican majority to 51-47. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had publicly urged McConnell to provide a health update. McConnell, a polio survivor, plans to retire at the end of his term in January 2027.
