Three people have died after falling from an observation tower in the Harz mountains of central Germany, authorities confirmed. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 16:45 local time on Wednesday afternoon in the town of Altenau, in the district of Goslar.
The Harzturm stands 65 metres tall and is described as Germany's tallest observation tower built with a wood-and-steel construction. The structure cost approximately 10 million euros to build, with around 1.4 million euros in funding from state and federal government.
The tower was officially inaugurated on 1 November 2024 by Stephan Weil, who was then serving as the Minister-President of Lower Saxony. The circumstances surrounding the fall have not been detailed.
