A suspected explosive device found on railway tracks in Treuchtlingen, Bavaria, has brought regional train services to a standstill and prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings in what local police described as a major operation.
A technician discovered the object in the track bed at the entrance to the station in the town of roughly 13,000 residents, situated between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt. Federal Police bomb-disposal specialists examined the device using X-ray equipment, with analysis of the images still underway. The object, described as an elongated metal piece, was being lifted by a robot for further inspection. Authorities have not ruled out the presence of explosives.
Regional services RB 16, RE 16, and RE 60 were suspended, with replacement transport being arranged. Long-distance trains were being rerouted via Ingolstadt, though ICE connections between Munich and Nuremberg remained unaffected.
