Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez spoke on Tuesday with Andy Burnham, who assumed office as Britain's prime minister on 20 July following the resignation of Keir Starmer.

The two leaders agreed to work together to advance a progressive agenda for Spain, the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world. Sánchez said the two countries share many challenges, values and objectives and pledged close cooperation.

Burnham welcomed the signing of an agreement on Gibraltar and congratulated Sánchez on Spain's victory in the football World Cup, according to a readout of the call.

In a parallel diplomatic exchange, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares congratulated Ed Miliband, whom Burnham appointed as Britain's new foreign secretary on 20 July.
