Andy Burnham is on track to become Britain's prime minister on 20 July, having emerged as the only declared candidate for the Labour leadership after Al Carns ruled himself out of the race. Nominations open on 9 July, with candidates needing 81 MP backers by 16 July, before a special conference on 17 July to formally confirm the new leader.
Burnham has sought to reassure party MPs, promising never to use party discipline to "stifle debate" and pledging that cabinet ministers would routinely vote in parliament. He has begun transition talks with the civil service alongside chief of staff James Purnell and former transport secretary Louise Haigh.
Meanwhile, 88 Labour MPs have signed an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill proposing a national commission on electoral reform. The amendment, tabled by Alex Sobel with 166 cross-party signatories, is set for Commons debate on 14 July. Burnham previously expressed support for proportional representation in a Reddit session on 3 July.
