Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Algiers on Sunday for a working visit aimed at deepening energy ties and declaring a definitive end to the 2022 diplomatic rupture between the two countries.
Sánchez, accompanied by Third Deputy Prime Minister Sara Aagesen and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, met President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and called the trip the starting point of a new era in bilateral relations. A key objective is increasing natural gas flows by 10% through the Medgaz pipeline, as Algeria served as Spain's top gas supplier last year.
The relationship was strained after Algeria suspended a friendship treaty in mid-2022 over Madrid's shift on Western Sahara; a trade thaw began in late 2024. Spanish exports to Algeria surged to €2.13 billion in 2025. In a lighter moment, Sánchez presented Tebboune with a Spanish national team jersey after Tebboune congratulated him on Spain's World Cup final victory over Argentina. A high-level bilateral summit is planned for autumn.
