A Russian "Banderol" drone crashed into an agricultural field in southeastern Moldova on Aug. 17 after straying from its flight path toward the Ukrainian port of Odesa, sparking a small fire but causing no casualties.
Ukraine's Air Force said the jet-powered drone crossed into Moldovan airspace after deviating from its course near Odesa. Moldovan police said the unidentified aircraft exploded roughly three kilometres from the village of Talmaza in the Stefan Voda district. President Maia Sandu blamed Russia for the threat, saying some drones enter Moldova deliberately to test the government's response capabilities.
The Banderol, identified by Ukrainian intelligence as the S8000 cruise missile, was first publicly disclosed in April 2025. The incident follows a pattern of Russian drones breaching NATO-adjacent airspace; a Spanish fighter recently downed a drone over Romania that had entered from Moldova.
