Moldova recalls ambassador from Moscow after drone strike hits village

Moldova has recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations after a drone-missile struck and exploded in the village of Crocmaz in the Ștefan Vodă district on 9 August. The device exploded approximately 2.5 metres above the ground after hitting a tree, damaging several households but causing no casualties, the Foreign Ministry said.

President Maia Sandu condemned the incident as a direct consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine. The strike came as Moscow launched attacks on Ukraine's neighbouring Odesa region on the same day.

Specialists determined that recovered fragments matched components of a guided missile-type drone. Moldova has recorded 52 unauthorised airspace violations since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, with debris from 28 missiles and drones found on its territory.
