A prison inmate who helped supply escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife with cash during his high-profile 2023 jailbreak has been found guilty of assisting an offender, while a second man was cleared of the same charge.
Adeel Khan, 32, worked alongside Khalife in the kitchen at HMP Wandsworth and arranged for £120 to be paid to Imran Chowdhury, 26, who then withdrew £400 for the fugitive, a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. Khan contacted his then-girlfriend with Chowdhury's bank details shortly after the escape. Investigators later found Khan's name and phone numbers in a diary Khalife carried when arrested. The jury deliberated for more than four hours before returning a majority verdict on Tuesday, convicting Khan but acquitting Chowdhury, who the court heard did not know he was aiding a fugitive.
Khalife, a former British army soldier, escaped by strapping himself beneath a food delivery truck and was on the run for three days before his capture. He was later sentenced to 14 years and three months for spying for Iran and escaping custody. Khan, who also pleaded guilty to possessing a phone in prison, will be sentenced on September 4.
