Portugal parliament speaker blocks hearing of minister over past police role

· Politics PRT

Portugal's Assembly of the Republic speaker José Pedro Aguiar-Branco has rejected a request by the Liberal Initiative to summon Minister Luís Neves before the Standing Commission, citing a lack of consensus among parliamentary leaders.

The opposition Liberal Initiative had sought to question Neves over controversies linked to his previous tenure as national director of the Judiciary Police, rather than in his current capacity as a government minister. Aguiar-Branco argued it was not legally certain that a Standing Commission summons would compel the minister to appear. Only the Liberal Initiative backed the hearing; the PSD and CDS voted against it, leaving the required consensus unmet.

The Standing Commission session had been scheduled for 9 September.
