The national counter-terrorism unit of Portugal's Judicial Police has taken over the investigation into the vandalism and theft at lawmaker André Ventura's parliamentary office, reported on July 28, 2026. Officers carried out forensic work at the scene after a Chega party deputy raised the alarm early that morning.
Ventura said personal belongings, confidential pen drives, and documents linked to a parliamentary inquiry into minister Luís Neves and political files concerning the prime minister's office were taken. He linked the burglary to his prior public remarks about holding sensitive inquiry material.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro called the incident inconceivable and demanded a swift investigation. Socialist leader José Luís Carneiro also urged a rapid inquiry and requested a meeting with the prime minister about the underlying Neves case. Liberal Initiative president Mariana Leitão expressed concern and backed a full investigation.
