Polish police have detained two men suspected of beating a young Ukrainian couple in Wrocław, following an assault that authorities are investigating as a hate crime motivated by national animosity.
The attack occurred on Okulickiego Street on Sunday, when three men assaulted a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man after a quarrel in a shop queue. Police arrested two suspects aged 27 and 45, one of whom was attempting to leave the city. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed the men had prior criminal records.
Wrocław Mayor Jacek Sutryk condemned the violence and accused politicians of building narratives on fear and prejudice. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked Polish authorities for their response after directing the consulate to take action. The incident comes as hate crime reports by Ukrainian citizens in Poland rose 30% in the first half of 2026.
